Sonu Nigam Criticises Padma Awards For Overlooking Iconic Singers Kishore Kumar, Alka Yagnik

Renowned singer Sonu Nigam has voiced his disappointment over the Padma Awards overlooking some of India’s most iconic singers. In a recent Instagram post, Nigam expressed concern over the absence of recognition for legendary artists such as Kishore Kumar, Alka Yagnik, Shreya Ghoshal, and Sunidhi Chauhan, despite their immense contributions to Indian music.

Nigam highlighted the disparity in award recognitions, pointing out that while Mohammad Rafi was honoured with the Padma Shri, Kishore Kumar, despite his global influence, was never awarded during his lifetime. “Awards are being given posthumously too, right?” he remarked, questioning the logic of acknowledging talents only after their demise.

The singer also drew attention to the lack of recognition for living legends. He specifically mentioned Alka Yagnik, whose illustrious career spans decades, and Shreya Ghoshal, widely regarded as one of the finest vocalists of her generation, both of whom remain unacknowledged by the Padma Awards.

Nigam further expressed frustration over the omission of Sunidhi Chauhan, whose unique voice and versatile performances have inspired countless listeners and budding singers. He emphasised the need to recognise these iconic voices, which have left an indelible mark on Indian music.

Encouraging his followers to reflect on the issue, Nigam urged them to suggest other deserving artists—whether singers, actors, or professionals from other fields—who have been overlooked by the prestigious awards. Through this call to action, he aimed to draw attention to the unrecognized talent that continues to enrich India’s cultural heritage.

Interestingly, Sonu Nigam himself was conferred with the Padma Shri in 2022 by former President Ram Nath Kovind for his significant contributions to the music industry. Despite the personal honour, Nigam’s criticism highlights his broader concern about the criteria for recognizing artistic excellence in the country.

The singer’s remarks have sparked discussions on social media, with many fans and industry professionals echoing his sentiments and calling for a more inclusive approach to awarding India’s cultural contributors.
