Actor Aamir Khan has shared his thoughts on why Indian films are not consistently nominated in the Best International Feature category at the Oscars. In a recent interview with BBC Asian Network, Aamir addressed the challenges Indian films face in securing nominations, particularly following the success of his 2001 film Lagaan, which remains the last Indian film to be nominated in this category.

Aamir explained the tough competition in the Best International Feature category, stating, “People forget that’s probably the toughest category at the Oscars. When you’re competing for Best Film, you’re competing with a limited number of films. But in the Best International Feature category, you’re competing with the best film from each country… And then you’re in an arena where there are 80 other films. To be nominated among 80 films is itself tough.”

He went on to emphasise the high level of competition from countries like Iran, Germany, and France, which consistently produce strong films. “There are films from Iran, Germany, France, from all over the world which are very good films. You’re in very good company. To get nominated is a huge deal,” Aamir said.

During the conversation, Aamir was informed about Shah Rukh Khan’s previous comments on the matter. In an earlier interview, Shah Rukh suggested that Indian films need to adapt their format to increase their chances at the Oscars. He argued that Indian films often include long runtimes and multiple songs, which may not align with international expectations. He used the analogy of needing to “dress up in the code” of the Oscars, rather than sticking to the “code” of typical Indian films, which often include songs and extended lengths.

Aamir disagreed with Shah Rukh’s viewpoint, stating, “No, I don’t agree. Because Lagaan was three hours and 42 minutes. And it had six songs. And it got nominated.” He stressed that the key to Oscar success lies in the quality of the film, stating, “To get nominated, the members really have to love your film. According to me, it depends on how good your work is, and how you’re able to touch hearts.”

In Indian film history, only three movies—Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan—have been nominated for the Best International Feature category. More recently, Indian films have made an impact in other categories, with RRR winning Best Original Song and The Elephant Whisperers taking home the Best Documentary Short Oscar.

Lagaan, a period sports drama directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, follows a group of villagers who challenge British officers to a cricket match in a wager to avoid paying taxes during a drought. The film starred Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, and Rachel Shelley.
