Sushmita Sen’s Legal Struggle Over Adopting Renee

Sushmita has often spoken about the difficult legal battle she faced while adopting Renee. Despite many obstacles, her determination never wavered, and she did everything she could to bring six-month-old Renee home. In a conversation with Twinkle Khanna for Tweak India, Sushmita Sen revealed that her adoption application was initially rejected, but she fought hard until she was finally able to bring Renee into her life.

Sushmita, who had taken Renee into foster care, remembered the court hearing that took place six months later. Reflecting on how firmly she had stood by her decision to adopt Renee, Sushmita shared: “So I had told my baba and the driver, ‘Baba, jaise hi bahar niklenge room se, gadi start kro, hum bhag jaenge bachhe ko leke because ye to mazak hai. They can’t say no. She’s almost calling me Ma’.”

In the same interview, Sushmita recalled how she had broken down in front of the judge, assuring him that she would do anything for Renee. Later, when the judge turned to her father, Shubeer Sen, and asked whether he supported his daughter’s decision to adopt—knowing it could affect her chances of marriage—Sushmita quoted her father’s response: “She has chosen this motherhood and one thing I know my daughter to do is follow through.”

Renee began her journey in theatre, performing in the play Hidden Agendas. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she made her acting debut in 2020 with the short film Suttabaazi, portraying a secretive smoker. She later gained behind-the-camera experience as an assistant director on Vicky Kaushal’s film Bad Newz.
