‘The Crown’ Season 1 Hits Netflix’s Top 10 Following Queen Elizabeth II’s Death

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last week, Netflix views of The Crown, which depicts her life, have skyrocketed. The Crown’s first season has entered Netflix’s top ten this week, the company announced on September 13th.

According to CNN, the series, which stars Claire Foy and Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, has received 17.6 million hours of viewing.

In addition, “Cobra Kai” Season 5 led the English TV list with 106.7 million hours viewed upon its debut on September 9. The limited series “Devil in Ohio” followed, with 70.8 million viewing hours in its second week. “The Imperfects,” the streamer’s new YA sci-fi drama, ranked third with 24.1 million hours watched.

The latter half of the list was rounded out by popular titles such as “The Sandman,” “Partner Track,” “Stranger Things 4,” “Echoes,” and “Manifest” Season 1.

With 30.2 million hours viewed, Queen Latifah and Ludacris’ “End of the Road,” a high-stakes road trip thriller, ranked first in English Films. The film debuted in the top ten in 80 countries. With 29.5 million hours viewed, “Love in the Villa,” starring Kat Graham, remained in second place in its second week on the list. “I Came By,” starring George MacKay as a troubled graffiti artist, came in third with 26.8 million hours viewed and reached the Top 10 in 84 countries. The South Korean drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” maintained its dominance on the non-English TV list.

“HRH Queen Elizabeth II was in the hearts and minds of viewers,” according to a statement obtained by the outlet from Netflix.

The Crown was released by Netflix in 2016. Netflix’s synopsis describes the series as dramatizing Queen Elizabeth II’s life, along with key political and personal developments during her reign.

The first season depicts the British monarch’s early life events up until 1955, including her marriage to Prince Philip and becoming Queen upon her father’s death.

Meanwhile, The Crown announced its fifth season will premiere in November of this year.
