The Gangubai Kathiawadi Box Office: What Will Alia Bhatt’s Biggie Be Like Among Her Highest Openings?

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi showcasing Alia Bhatt as the eponymous heroine and Ajay Devgn in an extended appearance will be released on February 25th. It has been reported that the film was welcomed with a standing ovation and received positive feedback from a wide range of sources after its gala debut at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival on February 16th.

For those unfamiliar with the film, Gangubai Kathiawadi chronicles the development of its namesake sex worker to become one of the most potent dons in Mumbai’s famed red-light district, Kamathipura, in the 1970s. Since its announcement, Gangubai Kathiawadi has generated considerable interest, and now that the trailer has been out, the buzz around the Alia Bhatt starrer has increased.

The three songs released so far, Dholida, Jab Saiyaan, and Meri Jaan, have also struck a chord with the public and the period setting.

Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s specialty will always find a way to capture the audience’s imagination. However, creating excitement for a movie is one thing; having that enthusiasm translate into box office revenues is quite another. This is where the economics of a film comes into play, where Gangubai Kathiawadi may find itself on a precipice of doom.

According to our trade sources, including production costs, P&A (print and advertising), and investment increases due to a prolonged delay (resulting from multiple theatrical restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.) Gangubai Kathiawadi is the most expensive female-centric film to date, surpassing Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika (roughly Rs. 115-125 crore).

Bhansali has recovered a sizable sum from selling satellite, digital, and audio rights. However, our sources indicate that the film must still gross a sizable sum at the box office to be declared a clean hit. Based on the number of distributors, Jayantilal Gada’s Pen India Limited paid for the film from SLB in the first place.

Take a look at the economy of Gangubai Kathiawadi in the table below:

  • Cost of production: Rs. 150 crores.
  • Budget for P&A (print and advertising): Rs. 15 crores.
  • Due to the protracted delay, the investment has increased by Rs. 15 crores.
  • Budget: Rs. 150 crores.
  • Satellite Rights: Rs. 60 crores.
  • Digital rights: Rs. 30 crores.
  • Audio rights: Rs. 20 crore.
  • The total return on investment (ROI): Rs. 110 crores.
  • Distribution rights: Rs. 90 crores.
  • The very minimum amount required to succeed is Rs. 110 crore net.
