The exact status of the population of the country comes out only after the census. Talking about the population of India in the present era, it is very difficult to find out the exact population without any census. According to Worldometer, a website that tracks population growth rates, India’s population has reached about 139 crores in 2021.

At the same time, according to the United Nations Population Report, the total annual growth rate of India’s population has increased from 1.2 to 1.36 between 2010 and 2019, which is twice the annual growth rate of China. According to this, the population of India in 2020 is about 138 crores. However, China is the most populous country in the world with a population of 141 million. This is because we do not know the actual population of 2021. Significantly, the last census in the country was conducted in 2011. This census has completed a decade. A lot has changed in the country in this decade. According to the final figures of the 2011 census, the population of India is 1.21 billion or 121 crore. This population is more than the total population of countries like America, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

The 2011 census in the country was completed in two phases. In the first phase, the house-counting was done from April 2010 to September 2010 across the country. At the same time, the second phase lasted from February 09, 2011, to February 28, 2011. This census is a milestone in the development of any country and plays an important role in policymaking. Census is conducted once every 10 years in the country. The last census has completed 10 years. A new census was to be held in 2021, but it has been continuously delayed due to the outbreak of the global infectious pandemic Covid-19.
