As the actor, Sanjay Dutt turns 62 today, let’s reminisce an old interview of him with Simi Garewal. During an appearance on Rendezvous With Simi Garewal in 2006, Sanjay had spoken about how he had made sure his father Sunil Dutt didn’t cry during his arrest in 1993 and how he had never felt completely at peace, at any point in his life.
Sanjay’s life was full of ups and downs. It was like any other dramatic Bollywood movie. This is why when a biopic on his life and associated experiences came on the silver screen, it broke all records. Sanjay got into drug addiction at a very young age. He braved the loss of his mother Nargis Dutt too at the very beginning of his career. With time, he got surrounded by a lot of controversies. Not only this, but he also had to spend a couple of years in jail, that too twice.
Sanjay was arrested under the provisions of the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act in 1993. In an older interview from 1997 with Simi Garewal, his father, Sunil Dutt, recalled the entire episode and told that his son made sure he didn’t break down in front of everyone.
“I remember that when his bail was canceled, he was supposed to be taken right from the court to the jail. They were handcuffing him, and that was the first time I realized that whatever I have done for my country, was totally futile. This is the thing which I had to see as a father. I got a little emotional. I wanted to control myself because I thought it’ll affect him. And he could see that my father is going to break down. And he just caught my hand. He said, ‘Dad, this is routine work. Hey inspector! Come on now, put the handcuff around me.’ He took it so casually and I genuinely tell you, I felt very proud of the boy,” he said.
When Sanjay appeared on the show in 2006, he was shown this clip of his father from an interview that happened nine years ago. He said, “He got shattered when that happened. I saw his eyes, tearing up. And I just didn’t want my father to cry in front of people who looked up to him. I had to do it for him.”
Sanjay was bailed out of jail in October 1995. However, a few years later in 2014, Sanjay was again sentenced to almost two years in jail. He was let out of it in February 2016.
Sanjay is now married to Manyata Dutt. The couple has two children together. He has starred in multiple movies after 2016. These include films like Kalank, Prassthanam, Bhoomi, Sadak 2, and Panipat. He has multiple films in the pipeline. Bhuj, Shamshera, and KGF Chapter 2 are some of his much-awaited movies.
