Udit Narayan Defends Kiss Moment From Recent Concert: ‘It Shouldn’t Be Overthought’
Legendary playback singer Udit Narayan, 69, has found himself in the midst of a social media storm after a video from one of his recent concerts went viral. The clip shows Narayan performing Tip Tip Barsa Paani (from Mohra, 1994) and engaging with fans in a way that many online found controversial. At one point, the singer appeared to return a kiss from a female fan, which led to an outcry across social media platforms.
The incident sparked intense debate, with some critics labelling it as inappropriate for someone of his age and stature. A Reddit user even commented, “…sir age ho rahi hai, respect hai apka thodi toh sharam karlo! Public me ye sab!” (Translation: “Sir, you’re getting older, you have respect, at least have some shame! Not this kind of thing in public!”). Others deemed the video “disgusting,” with calls for Narayan to be more careful in how he interacts with his fans.

However, when approached by HT City for a response, Narayan defended the exchange, explaining that fans’ enthusiasm can sometimes lead to unexpected moments. “Fans are so crazy. We are not like this, we are decent people. Some people express their love in different ways, and what should I do? There are so many people in the crowd, and we have bodyguards too. But fans think they’re getting a chance to meet, so some extend their hands for a handshake, some kiss the hands… this is just madness. It shouldn’t be overthought,” Narayan said.
The singer also suggested that there may be a deliberate effort to create controversy surrounding him, particularly regarding his family’s public image. “My family’s image is such that people always want a controversy to happen. Aditya (his son and fellow singer) stays quiet and doesn’t get involved in such things. But when I’m singing, the love from my fans is overwhelming, and I think, let them be happy. If not, I wouldn’t be the person I am,” he remarked.
Addressing the kiss with the fan directly, Narayan clarified that it was an impromptu moment. “I’ve been in Bollywood for 46 years. My image has never been one of forcefully kissing fans. In fact, I fold my hands when I see the love from my fans, and I bow down on stage, thinking that this moment may never return,” he concluded.
