‘Uncertain Over Film’s Release’: Kangana Ranaut Opens Up About Challenges Behind Emergency
Actor Kangana Ranaut has candidly spoken about the hurdles she faced while making her upcoming film, Emergency. In a conversation with ANI, Kangana revealed that the film endured immense scrutiny, causing significant delays and financial difficulties. Despite the challenges, the film is finally slated for release on January 17.
“It Was Not an Easy Ride”
Kangana described the journey as fraught with conflicts and obstacles. “Bhaut sangharsh raha… kaafi cheezo ka saamana karna pada (There were a lot of struggles; we faced many challenges). It was not an easy ride. The film was scrutinised on every single thing by various communities,” she said. She credited the Constitution, the country, and the censor board for eventually enabling the film’s release.
Financial Struggles and Setbacks
The production faced severe financial strain, leading Kangana to sell her Mumbai property after the film’s release was postponed. Reflecting on the experience, she said, “I had no idea I would endure such difficult times while making this film. Usually, my films are made on a comfortable budget, but this time, I faced struggles related to studios and funding. The biggest challenge was uncertainty over whether the film would even be released.”
Obstacles Surrounding Emergency
Kangana’s second directorial venture focuses on the 21-month Emergency imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from 1975 to 1977. The film missed its original release date of September 6, 2024, after failing to secure a clearance certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Additionally, it faced backlash from some Sikh organisations, who accused the makers of misrepresenting facts.
A New Chapter for Emergency
After overcoming months of hurdles, Emergency has now received the green signal from CBFC. The film, produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, stars Kangana in the lead role alongside Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and the late Satish Kaushik.
Kangana remains optimistic about the film’s reception. “We are eagerly waiting to show the film to the world,” she said.
Emergency will hit theatres on January 17, marking a significant milestone in Kangana’s career as both an actor and filmmaker.
