Upcoming Malayalam Film ‘Oru Jaathi Jaathakam’ Faces Ban In Gulf Countries Over LGBTQ+ References
Actor Vineeth Sreenivasan’s much-anticipated film Oru Jaathi Jaathakam has hit a major setback just before its scheduled release. The film, directed by M. Mohanan, has reportedly been banned in several Gulf countries due to its references to the LGBTQ+ community. The movie, set to release on January 31, will not be shown in most GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries, with Oman being the only exception.
The ban comes as a significant blow to the film’s international release, particularly as it prepares for its big-screen debut after its release date was previously postponed from August 22, 2024. This delay and subsequent ban have raised concerns about the film’s global reception.
Oru Jaathi Jaathakam marks the second collaboration between Vineeth Sreenivasan, director M. Mohanan, and co-lead Nikhila Vimal, following their successful partnership in Aravindante Athidhikal. The film, set in Northern Malabar, follows the journey of Jayesh, a man who undergoes a series of life-changing challenges after meeting a woman skilled in palmistry. As Jayesh spirals into a dark phase of his life, the film explores his path to self-discovery and whether he can overcome his trials to succeed.
The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Babu Antony, PP Kunhikrishnan, Mridul Nair, Vidhu Prathap, Sayanora Philip, Amal Thaha, Indu Thampi, and Kayadu Lohar, each contributing to the film’s intricate and compelling narrative.
Despite the setback in the Gulf region, Vineeth Sreenivasan’s career continues to thrive. His previous directorial film, Varshangalkku Shesham, a period comedy-drama starring Pranav Mohanlal and Dhyan Sreenivasan, garnered positive reviews, showcasing his versatility in handling diverse genres. Additionally, the actor is set to star alongside Dileep in the upcoming action-thriller Bha. Bha. Ba., directed by Dhananjay Shankar.
With Oru Jaathi Jaathakam facing hurdles in certain international markets, it remains to be seen how the film will perform in other regions. Despite this, the film’s strong local following and intriguing narrative are expected to drive significant interest among audiences.
