Vaginal Candidiasis Or Vaginal Yeast Infection; Home Remedies
Vaginal yeast infection or vaginal candidiasis is a fungal infection commonly seen in women. Studies show that around 75% of women are prone to yeast infection and experience it at least once in their lifetime. Genital yeast is experienced by men too but the infection found in women needs to be taken special care of as they will lead to severe health problems.
What is Vaginal Candidiasis?
A healthy vagina has bacteria and some yeast cells in it. Candidiasis is the condition where the yeast cells multiply due to an imbalance in the number of bacteria and yeast. The yeast called ‘Candida Albicans’ is responsible for the infection. Therefore it is not considered to be a sexually transmitted infection. But sexual intercourse during the infection can spread from one person to another.
Usually, with proper medication, the condition is cured within a few days. If the infection is a little more serious, it may take more than two weeks to cure. Those who are infected once are likely to get infected again, especially when there is a change in weather or diet.
- Vaginal itching
- Burning sensation during sex or urination
- Swelling around vagina
- More pain during sexual intercourse
- Milky discharge with a fishy smell
Normally, the Lactobacillus bacteria in the vagina will hinder the excessive growth of Candida Albicans. Sometimes they fail. Antibiotics are found to decrease the production of Lactobacillus (good bacteria) in the vagina. Most women during their pregnancy experience vaginal yeast infection as a change in diet, temperature, and medication. People with uncontrolled diabetes are also prone to infection.
Other reasons that you might get infected are overeating sugary foods, lack of sleep, stress, hormonal imbalance, and weak immune system. Let’s look at some home remedies to get rid of infection:
Yogurt: Natural yogurt contains bacteria called the ‘Probiotics’ which help the vagina attain the balance in the count of yeast cells. Yogurt can be either consumed or applied to the vulva around the vagina. It can also be inserted into the vagina using fingers.
Coconut oil: This antifungal can be applied externally and internally.
Boric acid: Vaginal boric acid capsules are widely available in medical stores. This is used by women who have recurrent infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) learned that 600mg of a boric acid capsule inserted into the vagina once a day is effective.
Tea tree oil: Oil having antifungal properties can kill unwanted fungi and yeasts.
Garlic: This is an inexpensive and easily available home remedy for treating vaginal infections. Eating garlic is an antibiotic treatment and not apt for treating infection. But keeping a garlic clove in the vagina overnight has shown good results as well.
Avoid tight and wet underwear. Wash hands before applying remedies to the vagina. As the vagina is sensitive, discontinue the use of a remedy if found causing more irritation. Seek medical help when infection stays for a prolonged period.
