Varun Dhawan is ready to make his streaming debut with the Citadel Universe’s Indian series. A streaming platform’s social media handle, along with the Russo brothers, has formally shared the news with netizens.
For the unversed, the Russo Brothers of the Avengers fame have envisioned the Citadel universe, which is being dubbed as the ‘first of its type global-event series’. They are also directing the first series in the spy world, which will star Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden.
The Russo Brothers recently confirmed Varun Dhawan’s role in the yet-to-be-titled Indian instalment of Citadel by posting a picture of him on social media. The actor posed against the bonnet of a car while wearing a brown jacket over a black vest and matching denims.
“We are excited to announce that the Indian edition of Citadel World will be coming soon,” the caption said. The local original spy series will begin production in January 2023.”
Varun described Citadel, his streaming debut, as a “exceptionally ambitious and fascinating franchise” in a statement. He went on to say that being a part of the universe imagined by the Russo Brothers’ AGBO and Jennifer Salke is a “landmark moment” in his career. “I have been a great fan of their work and I am absolutely happy to be a part of this project, and can’t wait to start shooting it.
“With the Indian Citadel, we’re definitely going to witness a stellar performance from Raj and DK,” the actor promised.
Although the other cast members have not been officially revealed, it was previously claimed that, in addition to Varun, Samantha Ruth Prabhu will star in the series, both of them playing spies. Citadel’s lead pair will also appear in several high-octane action sequences in the show, and will train in martial arts as part of their preparation. According to a source, Citadel India takes place in the 1990s.
In fact, the creators experiment with two timelines: the beginning and conclusion of the 1990s.”
Patrick Moran produced the project with Avengers: Endgame filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo, who also act as directors and executive producers.
The American series, which will be distributed as an Amazon Original, stars Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and Game of Thrones alumnus Richard Madden. Citadel wrapped filming in June, and the series is currently in post-production.
Additional Citadel productions in local languages are in the pipeline, including an Italian Original series starring Matilda De Angelis.
Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK will also act as executive producers through their company D2R Films. D2R Films and Amazon Studios are producing the series, with AGBO’s Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Mike Larocca, Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, and David Weil (Hunters) managing production on the Indian Original and other series inside the worldwide Citadel universe.
On Professional Front: Varun was most recently seen in Amar Kaushik’s Bhediya alongside Kriti Sanon. Varun has also signed on for the film Bawaal alongside Janhvi Kapoor.
