Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, remembered fondly for his role as the professor in Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots, passed away on Monday in Thane, Mumbai, at the age of 91. He was admitted to Jupiter Hospital following health complications but could not recover, as per reports. His final rites will be conducted in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Over a career spanning decades, Potdar became one of the most familiar faces in Hindi and Marathi cinema as well as television. He appeared in more than 125 films and nearly 100 serials, leaving behind an illustrious body of work. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta paid tribute on X (formerly Twitter), recalling, “I was a fan of his character as Jaggu dada’s father. The line ‘Ae Jaggu’ from Angaar made me his permanent fan. It was a privilege to direct him in my debut Jayate. He had amazing timing and a super caustic sense of humour. Go well Achyut.”

Potdar’s portrayal of the engineering professor in 3 Idiots remains one of his most iconic roles, with his lines continuing to live on as viral memes even today. Beyond 3 Idiots, he featured in several landmark films, including Aakrosh, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai, Ardh Satya, Tezaab, Parinda, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Dilwale, Yeh Dillagi, Rangeela, Vaastav, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dabangg 2, and Ventilator, among many others.

Before stepping into the world of cinema, Potdar led a life of service and discipline. He first served in the Indian Armed Forces and later worked with Indian Oil Corporation before shifting to acting in the 1980s. His transition into films and television marked the beginning of a remarkable second innings, making him one of the most respected character actors in the industry.

His passing marks the end of an era for Indian cinema, but Achyut Potdar’s legacy will continue to live on through his unforgettable roles and timeless performances.
