Voices from the Jail: Faridabad Jail Radio, Initiative By Dr. Vartika Nanda
District jail Faridabad was established in 2010 and is also considered as one of the modern jails in India. It is famous for paintings, pottery and other art and craft works of the inmates which are displayed in Surajkund Mela every year.
On 28th January, 2021, the jail radio in Faridabad was inaugurated by Sri K. Salvaraj, DGP Prisons, Haryana and Shri Jai Kishan Chhillar, Superintendent, Faridabad Jail. This initiative was taken by Dr Vartika Nanda, founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation, an NGO working for the welfare of inmates. She screened, auditioned and trained five inmates of the jail who now act as Radio Jockey of the Jail Radio. Vartika Nanda heads the Department of Journalism in Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University and has been working on prison reforms for the last several years.
This jail radio shall feature self-created programs, poems, stories with some inputs of Bollywood songs. It shall be broadcast within the premises of District Jail Faridabad. Faridabad was covered in the first phase of Jail Radio Model of Haryana Jails along with Central Jail Ambala and District Jail Panipat. This model shall cover all the jails of Haryana State gradually and will be developed as Tinka Model of Prison Reforms.
First prison radio in the state was inaugurated in District Jail, Panipat by Shri Ranjit Singh, Jail Minister, Shri Rajiv Arora, IAS, ACS Home, Shri K Selvaraj, IPS, DG Prisons and Shri Devi Dayal, Superintendent of the Jail.
