Nipah Virus
What Is The Nipah Virus?
Nipah is a zoonotic disease that spreads from animals to humans. This virus comes to humans only through those animals, which have a backbone and skeleton. Some cases of human-to-human transmission have also been found. For the first time, its symptoms were found in pig farmers in Malaysia. The disease was reported in Siliguri, Bengal in 2001 and again in 2007. This virus largely stays in a particular area and spreads through contact with patients.
According to the WHO, infected people initially develop symptoms such as fever, headache, myalgia (muscle pain), vomiting, and sore throat. This can be followed by dizziness and encephalitis. Some people may also experience unusual pneumonia and severe respiratory problems.
Nipah Virus
In severe cases, encephalitis and seizures occur. After this, patients go into a coma within 24 to 48 hours. This virus remains active for 4 to 14 days. Nipah virus is spread by infected pigs or fruit-eating bats. It is spread through saliva, urine, or feces. According to the WHO, in Bangladesh and India, the virus is usually transmitted through the consumption of fruits or fruit products (such as the juice of raw dates). These are fruits that are contaminated with the urine or saliva of bats. This is the main cause of infection.
How Can Virus Infection Be Prevented?
According to WHO, if Nipah is suspected, the animal’s premises should be immediately abandoned. Quarantine this place.
- Kill infected animals to reduce the risk of infection to people. Bury the carcasses of the animal under the supervision of an expert.
- The spread of the disease can be reduced by restricting the movement of animals from infected farms to other areas.
- Avoid consuming raw date palm juice or toddy. Eat only washed fruits, avoid eating half-dried fruits from the ground.
