When Sonam Kapoor Caught ‘Lying’ About Her Struggle Story

Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor, daughter of veteran actors Anil Kapoor and Sunita Kapoor, made her debut with Saawariya (2007), directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. While the film failed to impress audiences, Sonam secured a place in the industry and went on to star in several films. However, a resurfaced video featuring Sonam’s conversation with Rajkummar Rao has ignited controversy, as netizens called out inconsistencies in her statements about her Bollywood journey.

Sonam’s Alleged Fabrication of Her Struggle Story

An old video of Sonam Kapoor speaking with Rajkummar Rao has been making rounds on the internet. In the clip, Sonam questions Rajkummar about the ongoing nepotism debate and the notion of entitlement in the industry. Rao agrees that Sonam had an easier path to stardom, mentioning that she landed her debut film with a renowned director.

To counter this, Sonam claimed that she worked tirelessly for five years before securing Saawariya. She stated:

“It took me five years to get my first film. I auditioned my ass off. It is not easy for someone to like me.”

However, this statement appears to contradict another interview where Sonam spoke about how she landed her debut role.

Contradiction in Anupam Kher’s Interview

In an earlier interaction with Anupam Kher on his talk show, Sonam shared a completely different account of how she got Saawariya. When asked whether she secured the role due to her five-year experience as an assistant director, Sonam clarified that she was offered the film on the very first day of her job.

“I was 22 when Saawariya released. I got the film on my first day as an assistant director. Sanjay Bhansali took nearly one-and-a-half years to convince me to act.”

Netizens Call Out Sonam’s Contradictions

As the video compilation surfaced online, social media users reacted sharply, accusing Sonam of fabricating her struggle story. One user commented, “Her conversation with Rajkummar Rao shows that she is lying.” Another added, “She lies so much that she doesn’t even remember her previous lies.” A third user wrote, “Sanjay Leela Bhansali must still be traumatised. Saawariya was his first flop.”

Sonam Kapoor’s Career and Personal Life

Despite a slow start, Sonam Kapoor carved her niche in Bollywood. While some of her films underperformed, she received critical acclaim for performances in Raanjhanaa, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Neerja, Veere Di Wedding, and Sanju.

The resurfaced controversy has once again fueled the nepotism debate in Bollywood, leaving audiences divided over Sonam Kapoor’s statements.
