Masaan was the debut film of young director Neeraj Ghaywan. Before the shooting of Masaan started, Vicky Kaushal used to sit for hours at Manikarnika Ghat every day. During this time he had seen many dead bodies turning into ashes, black, fair, beautiful, ugly, rich, poor, fat, skinny. Vicky often felt sitting on the ghat that people leave and only his work is left behind.

The character of Vineet, who became Vicky’s father in the film Masaan, was also very difficult. He was playing the character of Domraja in the film. Domes are those who burn the dead. For this film, Vineet had burnt dead bodies at Manikarnika Ghat for a week. He used to work at the ghat every day for 10 hours so that he could do well in the film.
The film Masaan has been shot at different crematoriums in Banaras. During this, the actors of the film used to act among the burning corpses. Even the scenes from burning the pyre to turning the dead body were actually filmed. This kind of work is very difficult for any actor but the actors played their part with full dedication to bring life to the film.

Along with Vicky Kaushal, Pankaj Tripathi, Sanjay Mishra, Richa Chadha, Shweta Tripathi were in the lead roles in this film. The film also won two awards at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015. Along with this, the critics also appreciated the story and performance of the film. Director Neeraj Ghaywan also got a lot of recognition from his very first film.
