In her October-released memoir, Worthy, Jada Pinkett Smith has thrown the spotlight on many things. One of them is when Will slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars. Initially, she thought it was something pre-planned.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s memoir ‘Worthy’

‘I thought, “this is a skit,”’ she told People magazine while discussing her memoir. ‘I was like, “There’s no way that Will hit him”. It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realized it wasn’t a skit.’

Will and Jada were separated at that time. But his action seemed to have touched her deeply.

‘I might not have walked in there as his wife but I left that night as his wife. And as I sit here today, I am going to be by his side always.” She said to CBS Mornings. When asked about the slap, she says ‘It’s Will’s story to tell’.

The memoir also brings her rebellious childhood and mental health struggles in focus. She also emphasizes on the upheavals in her marriage with Will. With her memoir, she aims to debunk myths related to relationships.

The couple had separated in 2016 but kept it a secret from the world. The news came out very recently, in the last month, during her interview with People magazine.

‘I needed time for emotional maturity,’ Jada told CBS Mornings. ‘First of all, I was in a deep healing process, and I think I needed to really dissolve some false ideas of what marriage is, false ideas of what I thought Will needed to be for me, versus what I needed to learn to be for myself in order to have a loving relationship.’ In her words, the separation ‘did work’.

Jada continued to add, ‘I had to really do some deep healing.’

In an interview with Associated Press, Jada opened up about the status of her marriage with Will Smith.

‘We love each other…we are figuring out right now as we speak, what that looks like for us. But there is no being separated. There’s no “we’re going to get divorced”. I am not giving up on that dude. And he’s not giving up on me… So, let’s just stop and let’s get to this deep healing and figure this out.’

The comedian Chris Rock took a jibe at Jada Smith’s buzz cut hair at Oscars 2022. He said, ‘Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see you’. The reference came from the 1997 action movie G.I. Jane. Jordan O’Neil (Demi Moore) shaves her head off to become G.I. Jane in order to cement her position at Navy Seal.

While Jada responded to the joke with an eye roll, Will walked on the stage and slapped the comedian, resulting in an unprecedented altercation at Oscars. Afterwards, Will Smith had publicly apologized to the comedian, saying ‘I am a work in progress’.
