World Television Day and Indian Jails: Tinka Tinka India Awards: 9th edition to celebrate the transformative impact of television in the lives of India’s prison inmates

Curiosity has started building up for the upcoming 9th edition of the prestigious Tinka Tinka India Awards and Tinka Tinka Bandini Awards scheduled to be held in December. The event is poised to continue its tradition of honouring the exceptional talents and contributions of inmates in India’s prisons. This year’s theme, ‘Television in Jail’, adds a distinctive touch to the awards ceremony, which will unveil the winners across various categories such as ‘painting,’ ‘special mention,’ and ‘jail administration.’

Established by the Tinka Tinka Foundation Tinka Tinka Prison Reforms – Creating rainbows in prisons under the visionary guidance of prison reformer and media educator Dr. Vartika Nanda Dr. Vartika Nanda Tinka Tinka India Awards and Tinka Tinka Bandini Awards have been recognizing excellence in prisons since 2015. Held annually on the eve of Human Rights Day, these awards are unique in their commitment to honouring and encouraging inmates who strive for reformation.

Drawing inspiration from the success of the 2022 ceremony at Central Jail, Sabarmati, in the host state of Gujarat where the awards were released by DG Prisons, Dr. KN Rao, the 2023 awards feature a distinguished jury of  Shri Sunil Kumar Singh, IPS (retd.), Former DG Prisons, Tamil Nadu and Shri B.K. Upadhyay, IPS DG Home Guards and Former ADG Prisons, Maharashtra. These esteemed jurors have played a pivotal role in evaluating and selecting deserving recipients across various award categories.

The much-anticipated ceremony is scheduled for December 2023, with results expected to be announced by 1st December. Each year, Tinka Tinka India Awards underscore the innovative and creative projects taking place behind bars, positively impacting the lives of prison inmates and contributing to the nation’s prison reform efforts.

Tinka Tinka is the brainchild of prison reformer and media educator Dr. Vartika Nanda who heads the Department of Journalism at Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi. S Her recent research on the “Study of the condition of women inmates and their children in Indian Prisons and their communication needs with special reference to Uttar Pradesh” has been evaluated as ‘outstanding’ by ICSSR.

She is the author of 3 books on prisons – Tinka Tinka Tihar, Tinka Tinka Madhya Pradesh and Tinka Tinka Dasna. Tinka Tinka Tihar has just completed 10 years and was celebrated in Tihar prison complex in September, 2023.
