Yoga guru Ramdev has raised concerns over the appointment of former actress Mamata Kulkarni as the Mahamandleshwar of Kinnar Akhara at the ongoing Maha Kumbh. In a statement to PTI, Ramdev emphasised the sanctity of the Kumbh festival, calling it a grand celebration deeply rooted in the traditions of Sanatana Dharma. He expressed disapproval over the association of inappropriate behaviour, vulgarity and intoxication with the sacred event.
“This is a sacred festival. Some people are associating vulgarity, intoxication and inappropriate behaviour in the name of Kumbh – this is not the true essence of the Maha Kumbh,” Ramdev said, underscoring the importance of maintaining the spiritual purity of the occasion.
The yoga guru further criticised the recent trend where individuals who have lived worldly lives seem to transition into spiritual roles overnight. “Some individuals, who were indulged in worldly pleasures just yesterday, suddenly become saints or even attain titles like Mahamandaleshwar in a single day,” Ramdev remarked.
Kulkarni, a former Bollywood actress who made her mark in the 1990s with films such as Karan Arjun and Baazi, was appointed the Mahamandleshwar of Kinnar Akhara, a position of great spiritual importance, on January 24. This title, typically awarded to spiritual leaders who are considered key figures in religious discourse and social upliftment, has sparked controversy. Several saints have voiced their opposition to Kulkarni’s new role.
On the same day, Kulkarni assumed the spiritual name ‘Mai Mamta Nand Giri’ after taking ‘sanyas’ in the Kinnar Akhara. During the ceremony, she performed her ‘Pind Daan’ on the banks of the River Ganga.
In an interview with PTI, Kulkarni explained the spiritual significance of her journey, stating that she had started her penance in 2000 and chose Laxmi Narayan Tripathi as her ‘pattaguru’ (spiritual guide). She also shared that she received divine guidance from Maa Shakti, who instructed her to select Tripathi, calling him the ‘direct form of Ardhnaareshwar’—a revered spiritual figure.
Kulkarni’s transition from a popular film star to a spiritual leader has surprised many, as she had distanced herself from the limelight in the early 2000s to lead a quiet life abroad. Despite her new role, her appointment continues to spark debate among spiritual communities at the Maha Kumbh.
