Kiran Rao Reveals Why She Divorced Aamir Khan: ‘Wanted To Live Independently’

Kiran Rao is enjoying the praise for her directing debut Laapaata Ladies. Her ex-husband Aamir Khan helped make the movie. In 2005, Kiran and Aamir got married, and they broke up in 2021. Kiran told Brut India in a new interview that she did not “fear” getting divorced. She also talked about how much duty women have after marriage.

What Kiran said

Kiran said, “Aamir and I lived together for about a year before we got married, and to be honest, it was more because of our parents.” When that happened, too, we knew that an institution is good if it lets you work as a person and as a couple. I believe that how you understand marriage is significant since it was created for a specific reason and this social norm is very important to many people. Kids care about it.”

“I didn’t worry about getting divorced.”

“I think what we don’t talk about enough is how marriage tends to stifle, especially women,” she said. It is so up to the woman to run the home and keep the family together… It wasn’t a problem for me because I took my time. That being said, Aamir and I had and still have a very strong bond as people. We are closely connected; we love and respect each other, so that hasn’t changed. Because of this, I wasn’t worried. I understood that I needed some space. I needed the freedom to live on my own to grow as a person. I thought it was for my good, and Aamir agreed with me and backed me up… No worries about a breakup.”

Kiran’s Project
