SRK On Turning Down Oscar-Winning Role: ‘Better Actors Than Me’

Shah Rukh Khan is one of the biggest stars in Bollywood. He has a huge fan following across the world. But did you know that he once rejected a role in a Hollywood movie that won eight Oscars?

Yes, you read that right. Shah Rukh Khan was offered the role of the host in Slumdog Millionaire, the 2008 film directed by Danny Boyle. The film tells the story of a poor boy who wins a quiz show and becomes a millionaire. The host, played by Anil Kapoor, is a cunning and corrupt character who tries to sabotage the boy’s success.

So why did Shah Rukh Khan turn down such a golden opportunity? He revealed the reason during the World Government Summit 2024 in Dubai, where he was among the two Indians invited.

SRK’s connection with Slumdog Millionaire

Shah Rukh Khan said that he had a close relationship with Danny Boyle, the director of Slumdog Millionaire. He also said that he was the host of the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire (Kaun Banega Crorepati), the quiz show on which the film is based.

However, he felt uncomfortable with the negative portrayal of the host in the film. He said, “I was cheating and being dishonest as the host (in the movie). So I just found that it’s very strange that I’m being a host (on KBC) and I’m cheating in the film. So I explained to Mr Boyle that I wouldn’t like to do it, please, and there are way better actors than me. And I think Mr Anil Kapoor did it and he was fantastic as the host.”

Shah Rukh Khan also clarified that he has not received any substantial crossover work in Hollywood. He said, “I’ve honestly mentioned this, and it’s hard for people to believe. So, I’ll tell you with complete honesty – nobody has presented me with any substantial crossover work. While I’ve conversed with individuals in the English and American film industry, I’m yet to receive any enticing opportunities.” He added that he was not interested in doing stereotypical roles of Indians in Hollywood.
