Twinkle Khanna, the host of the YouTube show “Tweak India,” recently spoke with Masaba Gupta about her live-in relationship with Akshay Kumar before getting married.

On January 17, 2001, Twinkle Khanna married the love of her life, Akshay Kumar, in a small ceremony. Akshay and Twinkle have been happily married for 22 years, but they still have a youthful charm about them. While almost everyone admires their chemistry, not everyone is aware of the uncommon anecdote Twinkle revealed during a recent open discussion with Masaba Gupta on Tweak India. 

During a recent interview with renowned fashion designer Masaba Gupta on her YouTube channel, Tweak India, the show’s host, Twinkle Khanna, spoke candidly about her mother Dimple Kapadia’s reaction to her choice to wed Akshay Kumar. The devoted daughter said that her mother had made it clear that she should live with Akshay for two years before getting married. The actress acknowledged that her mother wished for her and Akshay to be absolutely certain of their decision to get married. She recalled her mother’s advice and stated: “When my husband said he wants to marry me, my mother said, ‘Nothing doing, you live together for two years. If you make it, then you get married.”

Twinkle Khanna also revealed to Masaba Gupta during the same conversation that her mother Dimple Kapadia’s advice regarding live-ins was specifically directed at her mom’s tumultuous marriage to her father, Rajesh Khanna. The author also discussed the possibility of growing up in a home with parental guidance from both parents. Twinkle weighed in on the subject by saying:

“She (Dimple Kapadia) said, ‘I have been married. I’ve seen what it’s like’. I feel that maybe if my parents were together, would I really want to constantly keep working, doing something? I probably wouldn’t.”

Twinkle Khanna also praised her mother, Dimple Kapadia, for raising her alone and balancing her personal and professional lives. The author thanked her mother for all of the work and sacrifices she made while raising her. Twinkle also acknowledged that because she was raised by her mother alone and was shielded from the patriarchal system for the majority of her life, she had no knowledge of it. She gave an explanation:

“I was raised largely by my mother. I would tell you that for the longest time I didn’t know that patriarchy and the patriarchal system existed because I wasn’t in the system.”
