Vidya Balan Reveals Why Bollywood Stars Shy Away From Gay Roles Unlike Mammootty In Kaathal: Read Now

In a candid discussion, Vidya Balan delves into the intricacies of LGBTQ+ representation in Indian cinema, spotlighting the stark contrast between the daring endeavors of Malayalam superstar Mammootty and the reticence prevalent among Bollywood’s leading actors.

Drawing attention to the recent acclaim garnered by Malayalam cinema for its progressive narratives, Balan lauds Mammootty’s portrayal of a gay character in “Kaathal: The Core.” However, she notes a glaring discrepancy: while Malayalam cinema embraces diverse narratives, Bollywood remains apprehensive, particularly concerning LGBTQ+ representation.

“We have to accept that it’s a more literate audience in Kerala. That’s a big difference. The texture of the lowest common denominator is very different in Kerala. I’m not taking away from him (Mammootty) that he did. But maybe it’s a bit easier there. It is a reflection of his society. I think they’d be more open to something like this. And they revere their actors like anything in the South. They worship them, especially the male superstars. So it’s that much more creditable that he went ahead and did it. He didn’t think it’d be a reflection on my machismo. He’s a much more secure actor.”

Analyzing Bollywood’s Hesitation

In an insightful discourse on the podcast “Unfiltered with Samdish,” Balan unravels the underlying reasons behind Bollywood’s reluctance to portray gay characters. She attributes Mammootty’s success in part to Kerala’s more enlightened audience and the society’s open-mindedness towards unconventional narratives. Additionally, she commends Mammootty’s unwavering commitment to his craft, labeling him a secure actor unafraid to challenge societal norms.

Hope Amidst Skepticism: Balan’s Optimism for Change

While acknowledging the entrenched norms within Bollywood, Balan remains optimistic about the industry’s potential for transformation. She cites Ayushmann Khurrana’s groundbreaking performance in “Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan” as a beacon of hope, indicating a gradual shift towards inclusivity and acceptance within mainstream Hindi cinema.
