Amid Tax Theft Charges, Arnold Schwarzenegger Detained At Munich Airport Over Undeclared Luxury Watch

On Thursday morning, Arnold Schwarzenegger made news when he was stopped by customs officers at Munich airport for not declaring a high-end watch. When he got off the plane from the US, the 76-year-old actor from Austria and former governor of California was held for three hours in the customs area.

As the day went on, Thomas Meister, a customs official, told AFP that Schwarzenegger was able to continue his trip, but “the watch will probably have to stay.”

There are criminal charges against the “Terminator” star, with tax evasion claims at the centre of the dispute.

The customs official made it clear that Schwarzenegger should have paid tax on the watch since he planned to sell it in the European Union. Bild daily claimed that the expensive watch, which was made just for Schwarzenegger by the famous Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet, was going to be auctioned off at a dinner in Kitzbuehel on Thursday to raise money for the actor’s climate initiative.

A source said that the star was never asked to fill out a form, and he tried to pay the airport taxes for the watch. But the card purchase didn’t go through, so Schwarzenegger was taken to an ATM to get cash, but the limit was too low. The source also said that the customs officer was able to get a card machine that worked, but then the bank closed, so the officers finally brought in a credit card machine that did work.

Items like works of art and signed souvenirs are often sold at Schwarzenegger’s climate initiative fundraising dinners. But the custom-made watch is now the centre of attention, which has gotten the Hollywood legend into some trouble with the law.
